Brief summary of The Blue Angel
The film begins by showing the professor going through his typical daily routine which gives viewers a feel for his personality. He does everything the same way every day, and takes his job as a professor very seriously. One day some of his students act up, and the professor finds out that they have been frequenting a local nightclub and seeing an actress by the name of Lola. The nightclub is full of people drinking and being loud and carefree which is the complete opposite of the atmosphere at the school. The professor visits the nightclub to force his students to leave, but ends up with Lola in her dressing room. Seeing the activities that take place in the nightclub the professor tries to resist temptation, but to no avail. He begins to drink and become intoxicated. He falls in love with Lola and demands that she be treated with respect like all ladies should rather than the prostitute she presents herself to be. Lola does nothing to entice the professor to love him, and even warns him and tries to push him away, but he refuses. They marry, but of course it will never last. Lola has to support the professor because he lost his job for marrying someone like her. Years pass and the professor falls deeper and deeper towards his demise. Lola takes on other suitors which drives the professor literally mad. The film ends with the professor going back to the school and dying. The two polar opposite atmospheres between the school and nightclub are shown as middle class respectability and burlesque lowbrow entertainment, respectively with the professor originally being respectable but tempted by Lolo’a physicality and paying the ultimate price with his death.
